| Much of the Western Algarve is quite different from the rest of the region. After Burgau the hills fall away and give way to large expanses of green fields, grazing cattle and windmills. |

| The main urban centre is Lagos, whilst a good deal of the West is encompassed by the Costa Vicentina Nature reserve, one of the largest in Europe. |
