This month we present to you a restaurant of a type rare in the Algarve since, at Moiras Encantadas, it is the owner himself who does the cooking with a radical flair for the creation of a somewhat different fare from that normally on offer in the region.
Situated in Paderne, a typical Algarvian village, this restaurant excels in its simplicity, in its intimate and homely atmosphere, its friendly service and in its already referred to gastronomy. The menu presents a variety of meat dishes, fresh fish and seasonal vegetables. Furthermore, on Fridays, a now famous Medieval banquet is served.
Having visited this place several times since its opening two years ago, we have always been surprised by the most beautiful dishes. In order to write this article we went once more to Moiras Encantadas and, after having managed to get one of the last tables, we were presented with the following menu:
For h'orsdeuvre we were offered a plate of presunto and home-made smoked sausage, olives and home-made bread, mussels with grated cheese, stuffed mushrooms, fresh cheese with honey, and a variety of other mouth-watering dainties.
Of the various main dishes we opted for the tenderloins of pork fried in garlic, accompanied by rice with vegetables and a very special salad (a mixture of fresh greens, sprinkled with sunflower seeds, and marinated in home-made vinegar), and bacalhau á "Moiras" (cod-fish "Moiras" style) baked in the oven, accompanied by sautéed potatoes and a selection of vegetables.
The meat was wonderfully tender, fried in the most delicate olive oil perfumed with cloves of garlic. Knowing that many people do not like traditional bacalhau, we would recommend vigorously that they try the Moiras version and we guarantee that they will be enchanted, since, here you are served only loin of cod-fish, lightly passed through the oven; very succulent and tasty!
From the wine-list we were recommended the Chardonnay Fernão Pires from the Ribatejo, a fresh and light white wine which accompanied our meal superbly.
To conclude, we were served a plate of delicious traditional almond cakes, from Monchique, which was accompanied by coffee and a tot of the traditional spirit, aguardente de medronho.
In the end the bill for everything came to a very fair €43 and we thoroughly recommend Moiras Encantadas to all our readers. But - a note of warning - Moiras Encantadas is an intimate restaurant with a limited capacity, we suggest that you reserve your table in advance, to avoid disappointment.
