"You can't put the bed there! ...It's going to mess up your mind." This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius and already Feng Shui is here to stay. Jon Batty takes a look at one of the most popular trends of the past decade.
The Age of Aquarius is almost upon us. Astrologically speaking, this is a time when everyone shall become their own guru and when science and mysticism come together, being no longer two radically often radically opposed entities. Although the Aquarian age is not due to start until 2012, already we can see evidence of the narrowing of the divide, for example, mainstream science is now very close to accepting the existence of human and animal telepathy; astrology is accepted as the best way of predicting natural disasters and established medical science is already investigating and beginning to take seriously, the treatment of ailments by holistic methods.
Certainly, the therapeutic benefits of methods traditionally associated with the East such as Meditation, Yoga, Acupuncture and Reiki are frequently advocated in the popular media. The ancients, it seems, and particularly the Chinese, have much to teach us and one of the most popular fads of recent years has been the Chinese art of Feng Shui, a technique of channeling positive, life-enhancing, etheric energy.
We asked Jane Oliphant, Director of Barringtons golf and health Spa at Vale Do Lobo, Almancil, what Feng Shui had done for her business:
"Visitors come to Barringtons golf and health Spa for many different reasons. But all our guests have one thing in common; they all benefit from the positive energy that you feel immediately you enter the club. Whether you are staying in the five star accommodation for a truly relaxing holiday, or giving yourself an energy boost with a workout in the gym, you will notice the feeling of well-being that is evident throughout the building and grounds. All aspects of the architecture, décor, lighting and gardens contribute to the overall equanimity. Even the signature colours of Barringtons' distinctive logo have meaning and induce certain effects.
Green being the colour of balance, harmony and energy whilst purple is calming, soothing and comforting. What better colours could you choose for a health spa? The steps up to the front entrance and the circular tower follow Denise Linn's theory of curved edges and avoidance of sharp angles and you can find many plants in auspicious locations around the club.
"Creative lighting can also be used to form an ambience; for example in Monicka's Bistro, the restaurant within Barringtons, the natural sunlight pours through the huge glass wall, creating a feeling of space and light. As the evenings draw in, you can also behold the stunning view of the pool at night, glowing iridescently with underwater lighting, and the intimate atmosphere in the restaurant, lit by soft lamps and candles.
"I wanted to create an atmosphere which combined natural elegance and style with a relaxed, comfortable effect in which guests would feel at home."
With her eye for detail and natural flair for interior design she has certainly achieved this effect.
